Fun Wine Facts

Think Paso Robles is still undiscovered?
In 2022, Paso Robles was visited by close to 2.5 million tourists! (For reference, both Napa and the Bordeaux region of France see close to 4 million travelers each year.)

While Paso is a little less traveled, that’s still a mighty number of thirsty enthusiasts in our neck of the woods!

What the hell is NV or non-vintage wine?
Non-vintage (often abbreviated NV) means the grapes that went into the bottle are not from a specific vintage.

You find “non-vintage” designation most often associated with Champagne and Port. These non-vintage wines are made in a “house style”, where the final blend of various vintage fruit represents the brand’s personality, flavor and aromatic profiles. There is a recent trend to do away with the term “non vintage” in favor of “multi-vintage.”

My opinion: Champagne and Porto must be short on marketers if it took them this long to figure out “mulit-vintage” is a better term than “non-vintage.”  Expect multi-vintage to supplant non-vintage over the next several years.

Looking for a gift for a real wine geek?
Karen MacNeil has issued her third edition of the “The Wine Bible.” It comes in at 736 pages and a price tag of $40. The name tells you all you need to know about this book.

Lafite Anseillan?
No, Château Lafite Rothschild did not change its name. But it did release its first new wine in over 100 years: The 2018 Anseillan du Château Lafite Rothschild. Btw, the dominant grape in this blend is Merlot, coming in at 48%.

What do you serve the President of France at a State Dinner?
Here’s what Trump and Biden served Macron

President Trump chose still wines from Oregon and a sparkling from CA:

  • Domaine Serene Chardonnay “Evenstad Reserve” Dundee Hills
  • Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir “Laurene” Dundee Hills
  • Schramsberg Demi-Sec Crémant Napa Valley

President Biden highlighted California producers across the board:

  • Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay Napa Valley
  • Roederer Estate Brute Rosé NV Anderson Valley
  • Anakota Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley

Interestingly, both Presidents are teetotalers.

Btw, the first State Dinner was hosted by President Grant in 1874. History does not record him as a teetotaler.

Btw again, the word “teetotaler” originated in England in 1833 when the term Tee-Total was used to advocate for abstinence from not just hard liquor but all alcohol.

Of note! The Schramsberg Demi-Sec Crémant has ALSO been served by both President Obama AND President Reagan at U.S. State Events.
